Hi friends. Here is a liturgy I made for our family as we light the first advent candle tonight. Feel free to use it for your family.

Prayer - Dad

Psalm 95 - Mom

The first Advent candle to be lit is the hope candle.

Light one purple candle.

Hope is a necessary part of living a life of joy and fulfillment. Without hope, it is hard to perceive a bright future.

There is a book of the Bible called Lamentations which is a series of laments or sad songs reflecting on a very difficult situation the writer is going through. But, right in the middle, we read these words:

Lamentations 3: 21-24: “But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, God’s mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in the Lord.”

Prayer 1 - James

Dear God, we thank you that you are a God who gives us hope for the future. Sometimes life is hard and confusing, but we know that you are a God of love who walks with us and leads us into a future of hope.

Prayer 2 - Adam

Almighty God, give us grace and power that we may not sin. Help us to turn away from darkness and turn toward your light. We thank you that Jesus came so humbly to earth, and that he will come again in glorious majesty to judge all people. We thank you for the hope you pour into our hearts. Our hope rests on Jesus. And because it rests on Jesus, we know that our hope is secure, because Jesus secured eternal life for us through his death and resurrection on the cross.

This Advent season helps us to focus on this hope that you have given us.

O Holy Night – Everyone (I used the version by Handsome and Gretyl)

Closing Prayer - Dad
